In the 1960s, both Santa Ponça and the nearby coastal area of La Calma experienced a strong tourist boom, with the construction of numerous hotels and tourist apartments.
As for the area of "The Square," it became directly linked to the growth of the region during the 1970s and 1980s, becoming a hub for nighttime entertainment in the area.
It was a lively center for entertainment in Santa Ponça. This space was surrounded by a variety of bars, restaurants, and shops that offered a wide range of options for visitors of all ages.
During summer nights, "The Square" came to life with live shows starting around 8:30 PM, initially aimed at children, followed by performances for adults beginning at 9:30 PM. These events included tributes to famous artists and other forms of family-friendly entertainment. The cost of these shows was covered by the surrounding businesses so they could be offered free of charge to tourists.
With the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic, everything collapsed. Many businesses couldn't withstand the impact and were forced to close. Signs reading "for transfer, for rent, and for sale" appeared on most storefronts. Those few that remained open found themselves isolated, leaving the square lifeless.
